IAN EAST
woodwind player/composer/teacher

I plays saxophones, flute, clarinet and zurna (aka zourna/sorna/surla..) professionally and grew up in cosmopolitan Londonium wot gave me a rather large appetite for various musics from all over the world though 'jazz' and C20th 'classical' is what I grew up on thanks to my dear old mum and dad who had a splennndido record collection and well cultured tastes. I am a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, a place that imparted in me a thorough grounding in many spheres of the musician's craft. I've worked with many groups and artists since then - the current ones can be perused via the band link below. I have recently worked at the Globe Theatre playing music to Shakespeare and am currently doing some gigs with the legendary GONG! featuring the classic line up of Daevid Allen, Steve Hillage, Gilli Smith and Miquette Giraudy. I've also been involved in music education for many years running jazz and Balkan music workshops. I taught jazz saxophone at the Blackheath Conservatoire for 11 years, performed/taught with Eddie Parker's Integrated Music Project IMPRO and also spent five years performing and leading workshops for Yehudi Menuhin's 'Live Music Now!'.

"East on tenor is fluent and passionate" Tony Hall, Jazz Express.
"our long range tip for the top" Jack Massarick, Evening Standard.
"[East's] tenor playing is peculiarly reminiscent of his soprano playing and he uses both
to good advantage."
Brian Morton, Jazzwise.
"I can't take this any more, he just won't stop practising his bloody saxophone!" Ian's mum in the 1980s.

"I can't take this any more, he just won't stop practising his bloody zurna!" Ian's wife in the 2000s.
