IAN EAST
woodwind player/composer/teacher

Ian plays saxophones, flute, clarinet and zurna (aka zourna/sorna/surla/zurla) professionally and grew up in cosmopolitan London with a large appetite for various music from all over the world. When studying for four years at the Royal Academy of Music he met up with like minded collaborators David Beebee and Patrick Naylor and went on to form Beeboss Records with them - a label dedicated to promoting British contemporary jazz and creative music. He has worked with Steve Melling's Quartet, Tim Whitehead's Sight Reading Mothers, David Beebee's Gaya, Brasil Universo (playing music of Hermeto Pascoal et al), New Dreams Quartet (inspired by Don Cherry), Philip Clouts Quartet, Paul Booth's Harbour Jazz Orchestra and Patrick Naylor's Soundial among many other groups and also runs his own projects - Balkanatics, The Red Davuls, Ian East Quartet and Momentito (with David Beebee). Many of the varied CD releases he's been involved with can be found on the www.beebossrecords.co.uk website. He's also involved in music education, running jazz and Balkan music workshops and teaching saxophone at the Blackheath Conservatoire. He performed/taught with Eddie Parker's Integrated Music Project IMPRO and also spent five years performing and leading workshops for Yehudi Menuhin's 'Live Music Now!'.

and he uses both
to good advantage." Brian Morton, Jazzwise.
